794.  THE HISTORY OF MAIL BOMBS, a Philatelic & Historical Study, by Dale Speirs. A new book from the Wreck & Crash Mail Society.  Pub. 2010.

This 128 page soft cover book, with 60 color pages, provides a complete history of letter & package bombs.  Hacking communications systems is not a new thing that came in with the Internet.  The postal system is just as susceptible to abuse of trust, be it theft, fraud, or striking out at enemies via mail bombs.  Philatelists seldom write about mail bombs for the obvious reason that there is little material available.  Successful mail bombs are usually shredded by the explosion, and unsuccessful devices are confiscated by police as evidence.  The closest one can get to exhibition material are handstamped postal markings and labels, indicating that a letter has been inspected by security forces.  Mail bombs are invisible postal history.  SC. $37.50, UK£26.00

CRASH & WRECK MAIL

795.  RAILWAY DISASTER MAIL, by Robin Gwynn & Norman Hoggarth.  Pub. by The Stuart Rossiter Trust, 2010, 322 pages.

The listings in this volume record cachets, labels and explanatory post office letters used on or with items recovered from rail casualties, also manuscript notes where it seems probable that they were or may have been written by postal authorities.  It also includes a handful of cases where no specific explanatory markings or letters are known, but surviving mail can definitely be proven to have been involved in rail accidents.  Wherever possible, factual reports have been cited giving details of accidents and background information.

Not only are accidents, derailments and train collisions included but so are train fires, hijackings, hold-ups, looted mail and theft, and the results of train collisions with motor vehicles, natural disasters, washouts, boulders on tracks, landslides, avalanches, and acts of war.  The authors have aimed to include only rail-related incidents, but because the circumstances of many incidents are obscure, it is possible that one or two of the accidents recorded in this volume may eventually prove not in fact to be railway orientated.  They have included an account of the USA "Train Late" / "Mail Delayed" cancellations that have been encountered, and for convenience have grouped these together under the first reference in 1891 although they cover the period 1891-1914.  Also included in the book are cases where mail was "damaged on the fly".  There is no pricing or rarity factors.  HC, NEW, UK£50.00 (US$56.00)

779.  South African Airmails, by Nicholas Arrow.  Pub. by author, 2008. 203 pp.  An outline of the airmail services affecting South Africa, with a listing of aerophilatelic material flown to, from or through South Africa for the period to to 7 February 1994.  Color illustrations of covers. 746. Les Marques Aéropostal, II – Les Aerogrammes Français Accidentés, by J. Le Pileur, in collaboration with E. Lambert & H. Truc, pub. 1939, 105 pp.  This was published in May 1939 and was a listing of all known French crashes and covers up to that year.  It was published in French, and gives a description of each crash, and shows the known cachets.  Very scarce.  SC, $35.00

710. AIR CRASH MAIL OF IMPERIAL AIRWAYS & PREDECESSOR AIRLINES, by Kendall C. Sanford, a recent publication by the Stuart Rossiter Trust Fund. This 225 page book lists all the known crashes, interruptions and forced landings of Imperial Airways and its predecessor airlines.  This is the first time a book has been published detailing the crash mail of a single airline.  The book includes a photo or illustration of nearly every Imperial Airways and predecessors’ aircraft that crashed or had a forced landing, and shows a cover and every known variety of cachet, label, manuscript marking or post office explanation, where mail has been recorded.  There are 187 aircraft photos, 96 covers and 174 cachets shown, plus reproductions of newspaper clippings about Imperial Airways crashes.

The book lists 100 additional crashes and forced landings, and 46 additional cachet varieties not previously recorded by philatelic books and publications.  This is based on the author’s extensive collection of Imperial Airways crash mail, as well as years of research by the author in archives, newspaper libraries, early aviation magazines, and consulting over fifty books, magazines, and other publications.

The same numbering system has been used as in “Recovered Mail” by Henri Nierinck, published in 1992 & 1995.  For the additional cachet and label varieties not previously recorded, the letters (identifying each type) not used by Nierinck have been used to avoid confusion between the Nierinck books and the new book.  Thus, the numbering system used in the new book is an extension of the Nierinck numbering.  The listings are shown chronologically by date.

The book includes four Appendices—A. Identification of Covers Without Clear Postmarks, B. Imperial Airways & Predecessors Aircraft That Crashed or Were Interrupted, C. Imperial Airways & Predecessors Pilots Involved in Crashes or Interruptions, and D. an extensive Bibliography.

A Pricing Guide is included as a separate supplement.  This is based on the current market for Imperial Airways crash covers, and will be an invaluable reference for collectors, dealers and auction houses that are buying and selling such covers.

The author plans a CD-ROM version of the book, which will be available in the near future.

The cost is US$80.00 plus actual postage

660. THE LONG WAY HOME, by Ed Dover. Published by Paladwr Press, McLean, Virginia, 1999, 148 pp. When The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in December 1941, the Pan Am Boeing 314 flying boat was at Auckland, New Zealand, about to return to Honolulu and San Francisco. As it was too dangerous for it the return back up the Pacific via Honolulu, Pan Am Headquarters in New York ordered the Captain to return in a westerly direction in total radio silence. This book expertly gives the story of the trip back to New York via the Dutch East Indies, Ceylon, Africa, South America and the Caribbean. It was a challenging trip for the crew, as there were no Pan Am support bases until they reached West Africa, and at least two stops could not provide aviation fuel, which meant they had to use automobile fuel. A fascinating account of this historic trip. HC,  Out of print.
